Shaped by water, Florida's Space Coast features 72 miles of picturesque Florida coastline, four national wildlife refuges, a national seashore, the nation’s most diverse estuary and Florida’s longest freshwater river. In the same place where you can see the world’s most advanced technologies launch people into space, you can see some of earth’s oldest living reptiles warming themselves in the sun. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to more than 300 species of birds surrounding Kennedy Space Center. Canaveral National Seashore is the last undeveloped stretch of beach on the East Coast and runs for 23 miles. It remains in the same condition as when Ponce de Leon first discovered Florida and named this area for the cane plants he found here. Long before modern transportation conveniences, people traveled on the St. Johns River via steamboats. You can explore these same waters with Midway Airboat Rides on State Road 50 just west of Titusville. See alligators, eagles and numerous other bird species on one of the few rivers in the world which flow North. Or take a swamp-buggy tour through cypress swamps, grasslands, pine flatwoods, creeks and oak hammocks at Forever Florida, a 4,700 acre wilderness preserve just west of Melbourne. Tours also visit a working cattle ranch where you will see descendants of horses and cattle that Spanish explorers brought here more than 400 years ago.
